VARGAS LUGO PABLO

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO [1968]

The work of Pablo Vargas Lugo takes elements from various disciplines, such as astronomy, cartography and archaeology. Making drawings, sculptures, paintings and installations, he develops visual and conceptual games that refer to language, to the conventions of certain systems of measurement, to millenary traditions.

Combining the super-flat quality of paper with three-dimensional notions, Vargas Lugo explores the element of mystery within writing, the inscription of a word, of a stellar map, of a landscape, or of that which takes us to ancient ideas of the sacred. Through the use of humor, his images transform these cultural conventions into mundane elements, bringing them closer to us, both common and extraordinary.
